השנה אנחנו מחזירים את אליפות האירופרס הישראלית לקהילת הקפה המקומית, ומאוד חשוב לנו לשתף את סיפור המוצא שלנו.
היום הכרזנו על השופט הראשון שלנו לאירוע המקומי ב-30 לספטמבר כאן בתל אביב,
ורצינו לשתף את הסיפור שלו כאן איתכם.

Hey coffee lovers! This year we are bringing back the Israeli Aeropress Championship for the local coffee community and it's very important for us to share our origin stories this year. Today we announced our final IAC 2021 judges for the upcoming event here in Tel Aviv and warmly share our judge's story here today with you all.
Bravo to Teresa Garcia-Plotkin, our final Israeli Aeropress judge for Elimination Round!!!! A 'new' face for our local industry but certainly NOT a new face to the wider international SCA Community, Teresa is one coffee aficionado you'll be eager to meet and call a friend. Let's be sure to welcome her with kindness and show her how wonderful and welcoming our local, little coffee community really is- towards old friends and new ones.

Can you share, in your own words, your job/role in coffee here in Israel? How are you a part of the coffee industry?

"קראתי את המאמר הראשון על השופט הראשון, צוקי אשר, סיפור מדהים. מצפה לפגוש את כולם. התחלתי את מסע הקפה שלי בשנת 2013 כשעבדתי כבריסטה במשרה חלקית בסטארבקס סינגפור. אז, עדיין עבדתי בתעשיית ההיי -טק כשאני מחלטרת בעבודת בריסטה במשרה חלקית שמאוד נהניתי ממנה.בידיעה כי ניסיון התעשייה אינו מספיק, התחלתי רשמית לקחת קורסי SCA(e). זה אז שהתחילה הקריאה שלי לקפה, עזבתי את עבודת ההיי-טק בסינגפור וטסתי לפיליפינים בשנת 2016 וביקרתי בחוות קפה והצטרפתי לבית ספר לקפה כמאמנת. כרגע, אני מאמנת SCA מורשה והעברתי קורסים בקורסי הדגל של Barista & Brewing של SCA. יש לי כישורים מוסמכים בקפה חושי וירוק וזכיתי ברשיון ה- Q Grader בשנת 2016. אני גם מצפה להצטרף לתכנית מרצים CQI שתתחיל באוקטובר 2021.
לפני שהגעתי לישראל לפני שנתיים, הייתי יועצת / מאמנת אקדמאית באקדמיה לבריסטה וקפה של אסיה הממוקמת בפיליפינים. הנחתי, יצרתי וארגנתי מודולים לקורסים, סדנאות ופעילויות אחרות הקשורות לקפה. הזמנתי אנשי מקצוע ומומחים לקפה להעביר הדרכות איכותיות הן ממערכת החינוך SCA ו- CQI.
מאחר שעברתי לישראל לפני מספר שנים ועדיין מנסה להתמודד עם המגיפה, אני מצפה להעביר קורסים של SCA בישראל, כולל למידה פרונטלית או משולבת.
והכי חשוב, אני יותר נרגשת מזה שאוכל לפגוש את כל מי שיחנך את האירוע באליפות השנה באירופרס בישראל."
Have read the first article about the first judge, Tsuky Asher, amazing story. Looking forward to meet all. I started my coffee journey in 2013 when I worked as a part time Barista in Starbucks Singapore. Back then, I was still working in High Tech industry when I juggled this part time Barista job which I personally enjoyed. Knowing that industry experience may not be sufficient, I formally started taking up SCA(e) courses back then. That’s when the coffee calling started, I quit my high tech sales job in Singapore and flew to The Philippines in 2016 and visited coffee farms and joined a coffee school as a trainer.
Currently, I am an Authorized SCA Trainer and have been delivering courses on SCA’s Barista & Brewing’s flagship courses. I have certified skills in Sensory & Green Coffee and earned my Q Grader license in 2016. Am also looking forward to join CQI Lecturer program which commences this October 2021.
Before I arrived in Israel 2 years ago, I was an Academic Consultant / Trainer at Barista & Coffee Academy of Asia located in The Philippines. I have facilitated, created, and organized modules for various coffee-related courses, workshops, and other coffee-related activities. Have invited coffee professionals and experts to deliver quality trainings from both SCA AND CQI Education System.
Since I just moved to Israel a couple of years ago and am still trying to cope with the pandemic, I look forward to being able to teach SCA courses in full swing in Israel including in face or blended learning.
Most importantly, I am more than excited to be able to meet everyone who will be gracing the event at this year’s Aeropress Championship in Israel.

What are your thoughts on the coffee community's recent growth in 2020 and what do you look forward to regarding this community in the future?
מה דעתך על הצמיחה האחרונה של קהילת הקפה בשנת 2020 ומה אתה מצפה לגבי הקהילה הזו בעתיד?
"ככל שתעשיית הקפה יוצאת מהמגיפה, קהילת הקפה גדלה באופן מאסיבי ומיצתה הזדמנויות צמיחה חדשות בתחומים כמו דיגיטציה של חינוך לקפה וקיימות של כל שרשרת הערך של קפה. כך, כל שחקן בתעשייה - יצרנים, מעבדים, יבואנים, בריסטות - מעוגן בנגישות רבה יותר לצמיחה, למידה ולרוב המוצרים והשירותים החדשניים.
בעתיד, אני צופה כי לתעשיית הקפה יהיה מגוון רחב של מסחר אלקטרוני ושירותים דיגיטליים המספקים ערוצים חלופיים לשחקני הקפה להמשיך בפעילויות כגון חינוך לקפה ומילוי עדיפות מרבית בייצור קפה באיכות גבוהה ולהבטחת הקלות של גישה לאנשים ליהנות מזה.
דוגמה אחת מושלמת היא כי הן SCA והן CQI הציגו למידה מרחוק בשנת 2020, המיועדת לחובבי קפה ואנשי מקצוע. מי שמחפש התנסויות חינוכיות יכול להירשם להרצאות של מומחי תעשייה מרחבי העולם, כמו גם לסדנאות וקורסים באמצעות תוכניות החינוך שלהם, המכסות מגוון רחב של נושאים המעניינים אנשי מקצוע בתחום הקפה." As the coffee industry emerges from the pandemic, the coffee community has grown massively and has leveraged new growth opportunities in areas such as digitalization of coffee education and sustainability of the entire coffee value chain. This way, every player across the industry -producers, processors, importers, baristas - is entrenched with more accessibility to learning growth and to most innovative products and services.
In the future, I foresee that the specialty coffee industry will have wide array of e-commerce and digital services that are providing alternative channels for the coffee players to continue activities such as coffee education and fulfilling utmost priority in producing high quality coffee and ensuring ease of access to people to enjoy it.
One perfect example is that both SCA( Specialty Coffee Association) & CQI (Coffee Quality Institute) have introduced Distance Learning in 2020 (Pandemic year) targeted at coffee enthusiasts and professionals. Those seeking educational experiences can register to lectures by industry experts from around the world as well as workshops and courses through their educational programs, covering a wide array of topics of interest to coffee professionals.

What do you love about coffee?

"אני שותה קפה כבר עשרות שנים. מה שידעתי עליו רק אז היה שזה יעורר אותי וזה עזר לי לעבור את היום. אבל מעבר לכך, קפה מאחד תרבויות וזה עוזר לאנשים להתחבר. זה כוחם של קפה וטכנולוגיה שמפגיש אנשים"
I have been drinking coffee for decades now. What I only knew about it then was that it would give me jitters and it helped me get through the day. But above and beyond that, coffee unites culture and it helps people bond. That’s the power of coffee & technology bringing people together.

"מה שאני אוהבת לראות על האנשים בתעשייה הוא עד כמה הם נלהבים בתחום שבחרו. כמו כן, אני באמת מעריצה את יצרני הקפה והחקלאים שבאמת מקדישים הרבה עבודה קשה וזמן לייצר את כוס הקפה האיכותית שאנו נהנים ממנה מדי יום. הסיבה שיש כיום קפה מיוחד ומדוע אנשים שואפים לייצר קפה מיוחד היא היכולת לטפח קהילות קפה עולמיות לתמוך בפעילויות להפוך את הקפה לפעילות בת קיימא, שוויונית ומשגשגת יותר עבור כל שרשרת הערך של הקפה."
What I love seeing about the people in the industry is how passionate they are in their chose field. Also, I truly admire the coffee producers and farmers who truly dedicate a lot of hard work and time to produce the quality cup of coffee we enjoy each day. The reason why there is specialty coffee now and why people aim to produce specialty coffee is to be able to foster global coffee communities to support activities to make coffee a more sustainable, equitable and thriving activity for the whole value chain.

What are you looking forward to as a judge in this event?
למה את מצפה בתור שופטת בתחרות?
"אני נרגשת ואני מצפה לפגוש את כל המתחרים, השופטים, המארגנים וליהנות משיחות קפה. בכנות, המגיפה הגבילה אותי בכמה דרכים לפגוש עוד אנשים בתעשייה אבל אני כבר מצפה לאירוע. אירוע השיפוט האחרון שלי היה לאליפות אירופרס בפיליפינים וזה היה לפני שהמגפה פרצה, כך שאירוע זה יהיה שונה בהרבה כאשר אנו מיישמים הגבלות קורונה באירוע כזה."
I am excited and I look forward to meeting all the competitors, judges, organizers and enjoy coffee chats. Honestly, the pandemic has restricted me in some ways to meet more people in the industry but am already looking forward to the event. My last judging event was for the Aeropress Championship in The Philippines and that was before this COVID-19 surfaced, So this event will be very much different as we apply COVID-19 protocols in event like this.

"לא משנה באיזה חלק בשרשרת הערך אנו נמצאים כרגע, בואו נודה על כך שזכינו ליהנות מכוס קפה נהדרת בכל יום. בואו לחלוק את התשוקה שלנו ללא היסוס, אנו ממשיכים לתת ולשתף. אני מצדיעה לכל אנשי הקפה. בואו לתת אהבה לכל כוס ולגדל את הקהילה."
Whichever part of the value chain we are in right now, let’s be thankful that we get to enjoy a great cup of coffee each day. Let’s share our passion without hesitation, we continue to give and share. Salute to all the coffee people. Let’s give love to every cup and grow the community.
